Diplomatic Angle: Indo-French Tech Ties Deepen with Launch of ‘Bharat Innovates 2026’

NICE (FRANCE). India has transformed from being a mere consumer of technology to a primary architect of global tech solutions. Highlighting this rapid evolution, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and French President Emmanuel Macron inaugurated the baseline edition of ‘Bharat Innovates 2026’ in Nice. Addressing an audience of global entrepreneurs, PM Modi emphasized that “Bharat innovates with scale and speed for the whole world,” noting that innovation is embedded in India’s DNA. President Macron lauded India’s vibrant tech ecosystem, noting that hosting this premier event outside India reflects the profound transformation in Indo-French industrial and scientific collaborations.

The core operational highlights and strategic announcements executed during the conclave are detailed across the following key pillars:

The Elite 120 DeepTech Cohort:

Out of more than 3,000 national applicants, a Technical Oversight Committee selected 120 exceptional startups to form the core delegation. Collectively holding over 1,500 patents and having already raised 1.5 billion dollars domestically, these startups represent India’s top capabilities in deep-tech sectors.

The Launch of Dual Innovation Bridges:

A highly structured, outcome-oriented innovation architecture was formally introduced at the venue to streamline the lifecycle of emerging technologies:

  • The Incubator & Innovation Bridge (Co-chaired by IIT Bombay and IIT Delhi): Aimed at linking academic incubation hubs, universities, and early-stage innovators with international testing infrastructure and cross-border immersion programs.
  • The Industry Innovation Bridge (Chaired by IIT Ropar): Specially curated to assist mature startups with commercial deployment, corporate adoption, intellectual property (IP) licensing, and global expansion.

30+ Strategic Agreements and MoUs:

The opening day witnessed the signing of over 30 cross-border partnerships. These binding agreements involve Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), and top-tier French universities to accelerate joint research, pilot tech validation, and academic exchanges.

Focus on 13 Critical Technology Pillars:

The three-day schedule centers around 13 critical technical sectors including Quantum Computing, Trusted AI, Biotechnology, MedTech, Green Hydrogen, and Climate Tech. Additionally, discussions are actively ongoing to establish a joint AI framework and double annual bilateral trade within the next five years.

Expansion of India’s Digital Footprint:

Beyond deep-tech research, the bilateral dialogues confirmed immediate infrastructure integrations. This includes expanding the footprint of India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) directly into Nice and key Parisian transportation hubs, ensuring seamless financial connectivity.
