The United Arab Emirates has imposed a financial embargo on Iran after fresh missile threats from the Islamic Republic. UAE’s air defense systems tracked two ballistic missiles that targeted the country’s direction from Iran. The economic measures constitute a blow to the UAE’s and Iran’s relations, which have seen a significant improvement in the last few months.

Emergency Alerts and Defense Response 

After the missile attack, the UAE ministry of interior sent out emergency phone alerts to residents. The messages warned of possible missile attacks in the country as the attacks were targeting ships in international waters. However, the attack caused no damages or casualties. 

Nonetheless, the missile defense system in the UAE detected two ballistic missiles launched from Iran. According to the defense ministry, one of the missiles landed in international waters while the other was fired inside the UAE’s territorial waters. This led to emergency alerts being sent out to the residents. It was the first-ever emergency warning about missiles in the UAE after an attack in Fujairah on May 4th. The ministry sent out follow-up alerts to reassure the residents that there were no attacks in the UAE and that the skies were clear.

In addition, the UAE’s defense ministry reiterated that they will deal firmly with any attempts to threaten the country’s security or trade routes in the region. The UAE’s defense ministers stated that their forces are on high alert after the attack.

Suspension of Commercial and Financial Ties 

The UAE has imposed an economic and financial embargo on Iran. The UAE foreign ministry announced that all commercial and trade activities with Iran would be suspended. According to Afra Al Hameli, the director of Strategic Communication at the ministry of foreign affairs, ‘in light of regional escalations undermining regional and international security, trade, commercial exchanges, and financial transactions with Iran have been suspended until further notice’.

Economic Repercussions for Tehran 

The financial embargo will have a significant impact on Iran’s economy. The UAE’s city of Dubai has served as Iran’s primary business and banking gateway, facilitating its trade with the rest of the world while evading harsh Western economic restrictions. In addition, the UAE was supplying about a third of Iran’s imports of goods excluding oil with billions of dollars in goods being shipped to Iran every year.

Iran’s Rebuttal and Diplomatic Fallout 

On the other hand, Anwar Gargash, the foreign policy advisor to the president of the UAE, denied reports of any financial concessions to Iran. In his tweet, he said that any reports suggesting that the UAE gives any financial facilities to Iran are sheer lies.

Iran’s Response

On the other hand, Iran has dismissed the comments made by the UAE about targeting its ships. Esmaeil Baghaei, a spokesperson for Iran’s ministry of foreign affairs, said the accusations levelled against Iran by the UAE are baseless. Mr. Baghaei called upon the UAE to refrain from accusing Iran of attacking Emirati ships at a time when Washington and Tehran are involved in a larger geopolitical struggle. He added that the UAE’s move will only derail the confidence-building efforts between Iran and the UAE as well as other Gulf States.

Geopolitical Deadlock and Stalled Nuclear Negotiations 

Meanwhile, attacks on the Emirati ships have intensified after the attack in Fujairah on May 4th. Although the attacks in Fujairah did not target the mainland, attacks on Emirati ships in the Strait of Hormuz have escalated as tensions between the two Gulf states continue to rise. This week, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) state-owned oil company Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) reported that its vessels came under attack on more than one occasion after coming under drone and missile fire.

Meanwhile, Mr. Baghaei noted that the timing of the UAE’s embargo was deliberate as it came immediately after sixty (60) days of diplomatic negotiations between Washington and Tehran. The talks, which began in April, ended without any deal. Moreover, Iran’s parliament continues to hold that the Hormuz strait will remain closed until sanctions are lifted and naval blockades lifted.
