In the early hours of Wednesday, 9th July, 2025, around 7:30 AM, a 10-15 meter part of the Gambhira bridge in Gujarat collapsed. It was a connecting bridge between Central Gujarat and Saurashtra region. How did the Gujarat Bridge Collapse happen?
- The 4 decades old Gambhria bridge was inaugurated in 1985, comprising 23 piers and 900 meters long.
- It has been said that the locals have highlighted the deteriorating conditions at regular intervals, but their requests were always ignored.
- Preliminary investigations suggest that the poor structure condition of the bridge and low maintenance are the reasons for the incident.
- It has been estimated that around 5 vehicles fell into the river, while two vehicles were saved in time.
Gujarat Bridge Collapse Death Toll
- As per the sources, 13 people have lost their lives from the incident, while a number of people have also been injured and admitted to the nearby hospitals as well.
- Six vehicles also fell into the river as one its slab on the river cracked and collapsed. Some people managed to swim to safe zones, while others are still struggling.
- A couple of vehicles were also on the verge of falling into the river, but they were dragged back on time safely.
- The government has not released the final death toll. It may increase upon the finishing of rescue operations.
Rescue Teams Deployed
- Soon after the incident, the Fire Department and the National Disaster Relief Force (NDRF) reached the site and started the rescue operation with the help of locals.
- A fire brigade team from the Vadodara Municipal Corporation was also engaged in the search and rescue operations.
PM Modi Condoled Gambhira Bridge Collapse Incident
- PM Modi, who is currently on a foreign trip, condoled the incident via social media platform X.
- He called the CM of Gujarat Shri Bhupendra Patel and confirmed about the rescue and treatment arrangements for the injured people.
- An ex-gratia of INR 2 lakhs for the people who lost their lives, while INR 50,000 for the people who were injured from the PMNRF, has been announced by PM Modi.
- Gujarat CM also expressed his grief via social media platform X in his recent tweet. He announced an ex-gratia of INR 4 lakhs for the deceased and INR 50,000 for the injured.
