Nepal Flash Floods Update: On Wednesday, 26 August 2026, a devastating flash flood hit the key areas of Nepal and caused massive havoc. The powerful flood severely affected the Rasuwa and Nuwakot districts of Nepal and swept through the villages, roads, bridges, markets and hydropower projects.

The situation also affected the Nepal-China border region, rescue operations are ongoing but it is so challenging for the rescue teams to save people because of heavy water levels.
Nepal Landslide: What Happened?
The disaster emerged in the morning on 26 August when the Bhotekoshi River suddenly swelled, sending a huge flow of water downstream. According to the Press, the river flooded at around 9 a.m. local time and damaged the major infrastructure.
As per the climate and disaster experts, the avalanche of ice and rock from a glacier in Nepal blocked the Lhende Khola river, Bhotekoshi. The temporary blockage was then followed by a release of water causing a strong flash flood downstream. However, the authorities are still assessing the root cause of this devastating disaster.
Nepal Landslide: Death Toll and Missing People Updates
As per the reports, approximately 403 travellers, including 341 foreign nationals, have been reported missing post the heavy flood in the nation of Nepal on 26 August 2026. The missing foreign nationals include more than 100 Indians.
Further the reports indicated, at least more than people have been killed so far in the flood. The massive flood swept away the number of villages and damaged the roads, bridges, and hydropower projects in the regions of Nepal-China border.
Approximately 558 people are reported missing from the Tibetan side of the border. The number of people unaccounted is a major concern. It is reported that 403 tourists were missing including people from India, USA, UK and Malaysia.
Impact on Kailash Mansarovar Pilgrims
When the disaster struck Nepal, hundreds of pilgrims were preparing to cross the Nepal China border, thereby creating a concern for pilgrims travelling towards Tibet for Kailash Mansarovar Yatra. Travelling to pilgrimages, especially in the hilly regions is a great risk to life. Pilgrimages travelling isn’t mentioned in our holy scriptures as well, hence it is of no importance.
Since, due to sudden flash flood and landslide, roads and bridges were damaged and communication mode disrupted, it became difficult for the traveller and travel agencies to contact each other.

Rescue Operations for the Ones Affected by the Disaster
Due to high water levels and damaged infrastructure and roads, the rescue operations become complicated. Nepal deployed military and army forces to the affected locations, helicopters were also placed for the search and rescue operations. Drones were also used to assist with search operations in majorly affected areas including Rasuwa and Nuwakot districts.

Further, the embassy is in coordination with the Government of Nepal for early rescue and providing materials to the affected ones.
PM Narendra Modi Speaks to Nepal’s PM for Relief Assistance
Honourable Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi had words with Prime Minister Balendra Shah and expressed his condolences for the lives lost during today’s flood and assured him that the people of India stand in solidarity with their sisters and brothers in Nepal.
He further assured that India is ready to provide all possible assistance including rescue operations and relief materials.
India Airlifted Relief Assistance to Nepal
The Union External Affairs Minister confirmed through his tweet that India has successfully airlifted relief assistance for the people stuck in Nepal floods. The IAF also confirmed the same news as well.
Six Bihar districts on High Alert
Bihar has been on high alert after heavy rains and severe flooding in Nepal raised fears of rising river water levels in the state. Six districts along the Kosi, Gandak and Ganga rivers are closely monitoring the situation.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah held a video conference with Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary to review the situation. NDRF teams have been mobilized, while relief agencies have been put on standby.
The Bihar government is working closely with the Centre as Nepal deals with the devastating floods. Rescue operations continue as authorities keep a close eye on the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli rivers for any further threats.
