Maharashtra Day Date

Maharashtra Day 2025: 1st May is a yearly observance of Maharashtra Day. It is the date when the state of Maharashtra was constitutionally came into existence in 1960, by the Bombay Reorganisation Act. It is a public holiday throughout the state, and the schools, colleges, government institutions, and many companies are closed to enable citizens to join the festivities. May 1 being International Labour Day, it acquires double importance within Maharashtra by associating regional pride and global appreciation of workers’ efforts.

Maharashtra Day History

Maharashtra Day 2025: The formation of Maharashtra is linked to the years after India attained independence from British rule. The era when the states were being reorganised on the basis of language. Until 1960, the area now known as Maharashtra was the Bombay Presidency, a big administrative division of British India that comprised the territory now known as Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Madhya Pradesh. The presidency was multilingual and consisted of people speaking Marathi, Gujarati, Kutchi, and Konkani.

Following independence in 1947, there was an increased demand that states be reorganised on a language basis to preserve regional and linguistic identity. The States Reorganisation Act, 1956, provided the framework for this initiative to happen, but the Bombay State still included both the Marathi- and Gujarati-speakers, which created friction.

  • The Samyukta Maharashtra Samiti (United Maharashtra Committee), established in 1956, initiated a movement for the formation of a separate Marathi-speaking state, which would have its capital at Mumbai. Along with it, the demanding noise to establish Gujarat was also taking shape.
  • These movements’ protests, demonstrations, and rallies picked up a lot of momentum. Amid this uproar, Bombay Reorganisation Act was enforced from 1st May, 1960 by the Indian Government. The act split the bilingual Bombay State between two distinct states: Maharashtra for people who speak Marathi and Konkani, and Gujarat for Gujarati.
  • Amid the making of Maharashtra, there was a huge dispute over Mumbai, both the states wanted to take over Mumbai. But because of a high percentage of Marathi speaking population, Mumbai ended up being a part of Maharashtra, and today it is the capital of the state as well.

Ambedkar.

The rich literary history of the Marathi language, its vibrant festivities such as Ganesh Chaturthi, and traditional arts such as Lavani and Lezim are given prominence on the occasion. The Forgotten Culture and Heritage of Humanity

Humanity has fought wars over territories and heritage since time immemorial. Often associating heritage with our identity, we have strived hard to pass on this identity, we identify as ‘heritage, space and territories’, onto their next generations.

The complex underlying phenomenon that most fail to grasp, is that the very thought of ‘passing on’ to the ‘next generations’ indicates that nothing in this world is permanent, neither us nor our subsequent generations. Then, does heritage truly define our identity?

Jagatguru Tatvdarshi Sant Rampal Ji Maharaj discloses the true identity not just of the entire human race, but also of all souls living in this mortal realm. Our innate tendency to hold onto things, whether territories or heritage, as though they are meant to belong to us forever, stems from our true celestial origins.

All souls emanated from Supreme God Kabir. He is not just our real Father, but also the divine architect of the endless expanse of universes. Our pitiful existence on Earth is, in reality, the consequence of a grave mistake we committed in the immortal ‘Satlok’, the pristine abode of God Kabir and our birthplace.

Despite our exile to this mortal realm consisting of 21-universes, including planet Earth, our elemental drives, tendencies and desires never cease because our soul is pulled towards the unending peace and happiness we experienced in Satlok.

However, Sant Rampal Ji Maharaj accentuates the oxymoronic behaviour of our mind that tirelessly runs after fleeting pleasures, searching for a sense of security that is never meant to last, despite acknowledging the mortality of this world.

Who is the perpetrator of this carefully-crafted machination designed to keep us tied to this make-believe situation, where our soul and mind are at a constant war? Unearth how we have been misled into believing this heritage, land, home, etc., are ours, when, in fact, our own body is also not ours and will meet its end at a predefined time.

Sant Rampal Ji Maharaj narrates the true story of our lives’ biggest mystery in this detailed video:
