In a historic feat, 18-year-old Indian chess prodigy D Gukesh became the youngest FIDE World Chess Champion on December 12, 2024. The milestone came after a stunning victory over reigning champion Ding Liren of China in the final match of the World Chess Championship. Gukesh’s triumph not only makes him the youngest-ever world champion but also marks the return of the title to India after 11 years.

Gukesh displayed remarkable composure and strategy throughout the tournament, defeating some of the world’s best players. In the final game, a critical mistake by Ding Liren allowed Gukesh to turn the tide in his favor, securing his place in chess history. Reflecting on his victory, Gukesh described the moment as a dream come true, one he has envisioned since childhood.

This achievement surpasses the record previously held by Garry Kasparov, who won the title at the age of 22 in 1985. Gukesh’s success is a testament to his hard work, discipline, and unwavering determination. Congratulatory messages have poured in from across the globe, with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailing the victory as “historic and exemplary.”

The accomplishment further solidifies India’s growing prominence in the chess world, inspired by legends like Viswanathan Anand. Gukesh’s victory is expected to inspire countless young chess enthusiasts across the country and beyond.
