One of the greatest mysteries in science is what is inside a black hole. We have never been able to observe the inside of a black hole. However, physicists have created wild theories using maths, quantum physics and clues from telescopes. Some people believe that the centre is a single point of infinite density, others believe it is a collection of strings, an oscillating star, a portal, or even an entire universe!

In this guide, I’ll go through all the major theories in simple terms. I won’t use heavy mathematics or jargon and by the end you’ll know what scientists agree on and where they disagree. You’ll learn why finding out what is inside a black hole could change our understanding of space, time and our universe.

What Is Inside A Black Hole? The Basics

Black holes form when a very large star runs out of fuel. The star collapses in on itself due to its large mass. All this mass becomes squashed into a very small space. This causes gravity to become so strong that nothing can escape, even light! This is why they appear black.

There are two main parts to a black hole. Firstly, there is the event horizon. This is the invisible point of no return. Secondly, there is the singularity. This is centre point. According to Einstein’s theory, all the mass is collected at this point. The event horizon is not a physical barrier. It is just a point where no matter which direction you travel in you will always go inwards.

Black holes are real. The closest known black hole to us is called ‘Gaia BH1’, and is approximately 1,560 light years away. The Milky Way contains ‘Sagittarius A’ which has approximately 4 million times the mass of our sun. The galaxy M87 contains a huge black hole of about 6.5 billion suns. Their photos look very similar, proving that black holes obey the same rules regardless of their size.

What Happens If You Fall In?

If an astronaut were to fall in head first, from far away they would appear to slow down, become redder and start to fade. However from the astronauts perspective nothing would happen. Time would flow normally for them.

If the black hole is very large nothing would happen as the astronaut crosses the event horizon. If it is smaller, however, they will feel a massive gravitational pull on their legs. They will be stretched out like a noodle. This is known as spaghettification.

Why You Can’t Escape

Once past the event horizon, space and time switch places. The centre of the black hole is no longer a place you can avoid, it is now a time in your future. You cannot escape going inwards.

What Is Inside A Black Hole? (According To Classical Physics)

According to Einstein’s equations, there is a clear answer. There is a singularity at the centre. Everything is squashed into a point of infinite density. Space-time is curved infinitely. However the maths doesn’t work here as the curve is infinite.

Therefore most physicists believe that the singularity is just a sign that Einstein’s theory isn’t complete. A singularity would cause information to be destroyed, which goes against quantum mechanics. This shows a fundamental conflict between the two theories. General relativity describes gravity well on large scales. Quantum mechanics describes very small particles. Both are needed to describe the centre of a black hole but they don’t agree.

Rotating Black Holes and The Ring Singularity

Real black holes are rotating. In 1963 a mathematician named Roy Kerr solved the equations for a rotating black hole. This resulted in a ring shaped singularity. In theory you could travel through the singularity and enter another part of space.

However all real black holes continue to consume dust and light. This means the inner edge undergoes a runaway effect known as mass inflation. The Kerr geometry no longer works therefore the beautiful ‘portals’ don’t apply. It is likely that the portal closes and collapses to form a normal singularity.

The Information Paradox

In the 1970s Stephen Hawking found that black holes emit radiation and slowly shrink. This effect is known as Hawking radiation. However the radiation emitted is extremely weak. A black hole with a mass of our Sun is only around 60 billionths of a degree above absolute zero. It would take around 2 times 10 to the power 67 years to shrink completely. The universe is only 13.8 billion years old.

The issue is that the radiation doesn’t contain any information. Hawking’s calculations showed that the radiation is featureless. Quantum physics states that information can never be destroyed. If you were to burn a book, in theory the ashes and smoke would still contain the story. However black holes appeared to destroy the information.

This contradiction between gravity and quantum physics is known as the black hole information paradox. It is so important that Hawking’s temperature equation is carved onto his memorial stone in Westminster Abbey. All the theories below are attempts to solve this paradox.

Theory 1 – Fuzzballs

In the early 2000s a physicist named Samir Mathur used string theory to suggest that there actually isn’t a void inside a black hole. Instead there is a massive ball of strings that have become tangled. This is known as a fuzzball. The fuzzball gets bigger as it consumes more.

As there is an actual surface to the black hole, things aren’t falling in, they are falling onto the black hole. As the information is on the surface it can slowly leak out via Hawking radiation. There is no paradox. Also there is no singularity as there is no centre to compress things.

Theory 2 – Firewalls

In 2012 4 physicists at the University of California, Santa Barbara argued that there must be a ring of fire surrounding this object. This is because one particle can’t be entangled with 2 partners at the same time. This is known as monogamy of entanglement. Something has to give.

This goes against Einstein’s statement that you wouldn’t feel anything when crossing the event horizon. The firewall theory means there is a choice between following quantum rules or having smooth space. Mathur disagrees with this. His work in 2018 argued that the surface of the fuzzball would grow to meet the object before it reached the hottest part. Therefore there wouldn’t be a firewall. The argument is still ongoing.

Theory 3 – Holography

Another idea is that the inside of a black hole acts like a hologram. All the information about what fell in is duplicated on the event horizon. This theory, known as complementarity, was first suggested by Leonard Susskind in 1993. The astronaut falling in sees one story and the observer sees another. Both can be true.

In 2019 this idea received serious backing. Two groups proved that Hawking’s calculations weren’t complete. The information about everything that fell in was imprinted on the radiation. They used new methods called islands. This resulted in the expected Page curve. Many consider this the largest step in solving the paradox in a generation. In some strange way the inside and outside are connected. However these results only apply to the simplified models. No one has proven this for a real black hole.

Theory 4 – Planck Stars

Loop quantum gravity suggests that space is made up of tiny grains. This means it can’t be compressed forever. Quantum repulsion stops it from collapsing. Just like with a normal star, nuclear reactions stop it from collapsing. This creates a Planck star. This is a small core that is very dense but not infinitely dense.

The extreme gravity causes time to move very slowly. From the outside it would take around fourteen billion years to bounce back. The black hole would then become a white hole and everything it consumed would be released. This suggests black holes aren’t eternal. They pause before exploding. There is also enough space inside the Planck star to store all the information that was trapped.

Theory 5 – White Holes

In 1935 Einstein and Nathan Rosen found a mathematical connection between a black hole and a white hole. Nothing can go into a white hole and everything inside is expelled. This discovery is known as the Einstein-Rosen bridge. This is now known as a wormhole. Enter a black hole and you would exit a white hole.

This seems like a shortcut through space. However the problem is that the bridge collapses before anything can go through. The entry is behind the event horizon so you can’t get out. The only way to keep the wormhole open is with exotic matter. White holes are allowed mathematically but have never been observed.

Theory 6 – An Entire Universe

This is the craziest idea. Physicist Enrique Gaztañaga and colleagues at the University of Portsmouth suggest that when the black hole collapses it creates a massive black hole. Inside the black hole it bounces creating our universe from the inside of a black hole in our parent universe. The reason it bounces is due to the quantum exclusion principle. This stops matter collapsing into a point. From the inside it would look like a Big Bang.

If this is true our universe could be one in a series. We could have black holes within black holes (Russian Dolls). The model predicts our universe to be slightly curved. Like the surface of a sphere. The European Space Agency is doing a mission called ARRAKIHS which may help prove this. It is a bold hypothesis but isn’t accepted science. The standard Big Bang theory is the mainstream opinion.

There are a few more theories worth mentioning. One is that there is a remnant left over at the end of the black hole that contains all the information. Another is that the singularity is a mass of quantum wormholes.

All Theories Compared

TheoryInsideSingularity?Status

Notice how almost all the modern theories don’t have a singularity. This shows how uncomfortable physicists are with infinity.

None of these can look inside. They test the rules on the outside. For example how big the event horizon is and how it grows. This must match any theory.

A great example is the signal GW250114 in 2025. The total area of the event horizons of the two black holes merging was around 240,000km2. The final black hole had an area of around 400,000km2. This proves Hawking’s area theorem with 99.999% confidence. In August 2026 astronomers announced the discovery of a black hole star. This is a young black hole surrounded by dense gas causing it to glow like a star. This was discovered 660 million years after the Big Bang. This may help explain how giant black holes grew so quickly.

Conclusion: So What Is Inside A Black Hole?

We really don’t know. Einstein points towards a singularity, string theory suggests a fuzzball, quantum gravity implies a bounce and wild minds suggest entire new universes. All try to fix the crack in gravity and quantum physics.

This shows a deeper part of us. Humans always want to know what is on the other side. This is what drives all progress.
