PM Modi visit Netherlands: Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in the Netherlands on Friday evening to begin the crucial second leg of his five-nation tour. The three-day official visit aims to deepen bilateral relations and elevate economic cooperation between the two nations through a comprehensive Strategic Partnership framework. A Warm Welcome in Amsterdam and The Hague

The Prime Minister landed at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport, where senior Dutch and Indian officials received him. The welcoming delegation included Rear Admiral Ludger Brummelaar, who serves as the Adjutant-General and Chief of the Military Household of the Dutch King, alongside Dutch Foreign Minister Tom Berendsen. India’s Ambassador to the Netherlands, Kumar Tuhin, was also present to mark the arrival.

Shortly after his arrival, Prime Minister Modi shared his outlook for the visit on the social media platform X. He noted that the visit provides an excellent opportunity to expand cooperation in forward-looking sectors like semiconductors, water management, and clean energy. During his stay from May 15 to May 17, the Prime Minister will hold bilateral talks with Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten, call on King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima, and interact with top business executives.

Following his arrival in Amsterdam, the Prime Minister travelled to The Hague, where members of the Indian diaspora gave him an enthusiastic reception. The Netherlands is home to a vibrant Indian community of over 90,000 non-resident Indians and persons of Indian origin, alongside a large Suriname-Hindustani community. The diaspora welcomed the Prime Minister with traditional cultural performances, including Kathak and Garba dances. Prime Minister Modi is scheduled to address a major community event on Saturday to engage directly with the diaspora.

Strengthening Trade and the Semiconductor Partnership

Economic ties form the backbone of the relationship between New Delhi and Amsterdam. Bilateral trade between India and the Netherlands reached approximately 27.8 billion dollars during the 2024-25 financial year. The Netherlands stands as one of India’s top trading partners in Europe and ranks as its fourth-largest investor, contributing a cumulative foreign direct investment of around 55.6 billion dollars.

A primary focus of this visit is to establish concrete partnerships in high-technology manufacturing. Indian officials are looking to leverage Dutch expertise in the semiconductor industry, particularly through global industry leaders like ASML, to support India’s growing chipmaking ambitions. The two sides expect to sign several agreements and memorandums of understanding to formalize cooperation in semiconductors, artificial intelligence, and emerging technologies.

Focus on Green Transition, Water, and Defence

Beyond technology, the bilateral talks will focus heavily on sustainability and climate action. Both nations are committed to accelerating the green transition, with specific discussions planned around renewable energy, green hydrogen, and clean technologies.

Water management remains another critical pillar of the relationship, building upon the existing Strategic Partnership on Water. The leaders will explore new ways to share expertise in flood control, water purification, and maritime domain conservation. Agriculture, innovation, and enhanced defence and security cooperation are also high on the agenda, as both countries seek to secure supply chains amid global economic challenges.

Context of the Five-Nation Tour

The Netherlands leg follows a brief but productive stopover in the United Arab Emirates on May 15. In Abu Dhabi, Prime Minister Modi met with UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan to discuss critical energy cooperation, defence pacts, and bilateral investments, which reports indicate included investment commitments worth 5 billion dollars. The leaders also discussed regional security issues, including a mutual condemnation of recent attacks in the region amid ongoing West Asia tensions.

The broader six-day tour, spanning from May 15 to May 20, is designed to strengthen India’s strategic positioning across Europe and the Gulf. After concluding his engagements in the Netherlands on Sunday, Prime Minister Modi will head to Sweden and Norway. In Oslo, he will participate in the third India-Nordic Summit to discuss green technology and innovation. The Prime Minister will conclude his international tour with a visit to Italy for high-level bilateral discussions.

As the official meetings unfold over the weekend, updates from India’s Ministry of External Affairs and the Prime Minister’s Office are expected to provide details on signed agreements and strategic outcomes.
