Electric double-decker buses return to Delhi after decades
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Friday flagged off Delhi Tourism’s new electric double-decker tourist bus service, marking the return of the towering vehicles to the capital’s roads nearly four decades after they were phased out.
Double-decker buses were earlier operated by the Delhi Transport Corporation as ‘Suvidha’ services before being discontinued in 1989 due to the withdrawal of an ageing fleet. The new initiative revives that format with modern features, safety systems and an electric powertrain.
Two such buses are planned to be made operational as part of the tourism initiative.
Describing the launch as a step towards strengthening Delhi’s tourism sector, Gupta said the service will allow visitors to experience both heritage sites and modern landmarks in a single journey.
Launch ceremony and inaugural ride

The service was formally launched from Rafi Marg. After the flag-off, the chief minister, along with Tourism Minister Kapil Mishra and departmental officials, boarded the bus for a demonstration ride.
The inaugural journey travelled via India Gate, Akbar Road and Teen Murti Marg to the Prime Ministers’ Museum, also known as the Pradhanmantri Sangrahalaya.
The 63-seater bus features a panoramic upper deck and modern amenities designed to provide a comfortable travel experience. Officials said it can accommodate over 63 passengers in addition to the driver.
Gupta described the project as an example of the government’s “visionary policy” and the effective implementation of the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model.
Fixed tourism circuit across central Delhi
The Delhi Tourism Department will operate the bus on a fixed route connecting major landmarks in central Delhi, particularly within Lutyens’ Delhi. The area was selected because it does not pose challenges related to overhead electric wires or low tree canopies.
The circuit includes prominent national, cultural and governmental sites such as:
- Vijay Chowk
- Rashtrapati Bhavan
- North Block and South Block
- National Museum
- National Gallery of Modern Art
- National War Memorial
- India Gate
- Prime Ministers’ Museum
- Bharat Mandapam
- Dilli Haat
- New Parliament complex
The bus will depart daily from Delhi Haat-INA at 9 a.m. and return to the same point after completing the circuit.
Evening tours are also planned. Officials said the schedule has been structured keeping in mind the closing time of the Prime Ministers’ Museum at 6 p.m., with tours beginning from the museum before proceeding to other destinations.

A trained guide will be on board to brief passengers about the historical and cultural significance of each location.
Fare structure and ticket booking

The fare for the service has been fixed at ₹500 for adults. Children aged five to ten or six to twelve years, depending on the category mentioned, will be charged ₹300 plus applicable taxes. Children below five years may travel free.
Tickets can be booked online through the official Delhi Tourism website, while offline tickets are available at designated counters listed on the website.
Officials said the service is intended for both domestic and foreign tourists seeking a structured and comfortable way to explore the capital.
Sustainability focus and modern tourism push
The electric bus operates as a zero-emission vehicle, aligning with efforts to promote green mobility and clean tourism.
Gupta said the initiative reflects a commitment to sustainable development while preserving the city’s cultural legacy. She noted that Delhi is building a new global identity through modern landmarks such as Bharat Mandapam, Yashobhoomi, the Central Vista, the new Parliament building and the Prime Minister’s Museum alongside its historical heritage.
The chief minister said the government is inspired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of “Vikas Bhi, Virasat Bhi” — development alongside heritage — and aims to ensure that progress and tradition advance together.
The electric double-decker bus, she added, will provide a comfortable and memorable experience while helping reduce carbon emissions.
Positioning Delhi as a destination city
Tourism Minister Kapil Mishra said the initiative aims to reposition Delhi as a major tourism destination rather than merely a transit city.
He said the capital has over 1,200 monuments along with a blend of ancient and modern landmarks, making it uniquely suited for curated heritage tours.
Mishra also said that inadequate tourism infrastructure and environmental neglect under previous administrations had limited the city’s tourism potential, but the new service represents a shift towards a more destination-focused approach.
Officials added that the guided circuit provides a comprehensive overview of Delhi’s historical, cultural and national landmarks within a single journey.
Structured tourism experience for visitors
By combining heritage sites, government institutions and modern infrastructure projects, the ‘Dekho Meri Dilli’ service seeks to offer a curated introduction to the capital for first-time visitors as well as residents.
The design of the route through Lutyens’ Delhi ensures smooth operations for a double-decker vehicle while showcasing some of the most significant symbols of India’s political and cultural landscape.
Authorities say the initiative is intended to enhance the visitor experience, strengthen tourism infrastructure and promote environmentally responsible travel in the capital.
Spiritual Reflection on Heritage and Progress
The launch of a tourism service that connects historical monuments with modern institutions also reflects a deeper idea of continuity between past values and present development. Spiritual traditions often emphasise preserving heritage while advancing responsibly, ensuring that progress does not erase cultural identity.
According to the teachings of Tatvdarshi Sant Rampal Ji Maharaj, true progress is meaningful when it remains connected to moral values, social harmony and awareness of one’s roots. He teaches that material advancement and cultural preservation should move together so that society benefits without losing its foundational wisdom. Such perspectives highlight the importance of balancing development with enduring principles.
