Democrats secured control of the US Senate in the November 3, 2026, midterm elections after flipping at least seven Republican-held seats. The closely watched Mississippi contest remained unresolved on November 4, with NBC News reporting Democrat Scott Colom ahead of Republican incumbent Cindy Hyde-Smith by 43 votes as ballots continued to be counted.

Democrats Secure a Senate Majority

Democrats won control of the U.S. Senate in the November 3, 2026, midterm elections, the Associated Press reported. The result changes the balance of power in Washington during the final two years of President Donald Trump’s term.

NBC News reported a preliminary tally of 54 Democratic seats and 44 Republican seats on Wednesday morning, with Alaska and Mississippi still uncalled. The figures were an election-night snapshot, not a completed count. A majority requires 51 seats. The AP said the Democratic majority could block legislation and nominees and investigate the Trump administration.

Seven Republican-Held Seats Change Party

NBC News reported that Democrats flipped seven Republican-held Senate seats: Kansas, Iowa, Texas, Ohio, Maine, North Carolina and South Carolina. The reported winners were Josh Turek, Adam Hamilton, James Talarico, Sherrod Brown, Troy Jackson, Roy Cooper and Annie Andrews, respectively.

The contests included incumbent defeats and open seats. In Ohio, former senator Sherrod Brown defeated Republican Jon Husted. In Maine, Troy Jackson defeated incumbent Susan Collins. In North Carolina, former governor Roy Cooper defeated Michael Whatley. In South Carolina, Annie Andrews defeated appointed Republican senator Darline Graham. Roll Call reported Graham had been appointed after her brother, Senator Lindsey Graham, died.

Democrats also held Georgia and New Hampshire. Senator Jon Ossoff won re-election against Mike Collins, while Chris Pappas won in New Hampshire against former senator John Sununu, NBC News reported.

Mississippi Senate Race Remains Unresolved

Mississippi was among the closest contests. Democratic district attorney Scott Colom challenged Republican incumbent Cindy Hyde-Smith. NBC News reported Colom ahead by 43 votes with more than 95 percent counted on Wednesday morning, but said the race was too close to call. The Washington Post described it as essentially tied with 97 percent counted.

The Associated Press had not projected a winner in the reporting cited by Mississippi Today. Colom’s campaign estimated that 10,000 to 15,000 affidavit ballots remained. Hyde-Smith’s campaign said its internal figures showed she would win. Independent candidate Ty Pinkins received about 2.1 percent in the unofficial returns at the time of those election-night updates. These were campaign claims, not certified results. Mississippi Today reported Hyde-Smith had led slightly late Tuesday before later returns narrowed and shifted the margin. Updates reflected different reporting times and unofficial tallies. Mississippi has no runoff in federal general elections; the candidate with the most votes wins.

If Colom’s lead holds, he would be the first Democrat elected to the U.S. Senate from Mississippi since John Stennis in 1982, Darkhorse Press reported. The Washington Post noted the state had not elected a Democrat statewide in more than 40 years or an African American statewide since Reconstruction.

The Candidates and Campaign Background

Hyde-Smith was appointed to the Senate in 2018 after her predecessor resigned, then won a special election against former Agriculture Secretary Mike Espy. The Washington Post reported she won by seven percentage points and by 10 points in 2020.

Her 2018 campaign drew criticism after she remarked about being in the front row at a “public hanging” if invited by a cattle rancher. In 2026, she faced criticism over a television interview in which she suggested people concerned about high beef prices could choose another protein.

Colom, a district attorney in northern Mississippi, campaigned under “Pick a new senator.” President Joe Biden nominated him for a federal judgeship in 2022. The Washington Post reported some state Republicans supported the nomination, while Hyde-Smith opposed it and called Colom a far-left extremist.
Colom received support from Kamala Harris, Raphael Warnock, Pete Buttigieg and Bill Clinton. The Post described a campaign taco truck offering protein choices and a Halloween digital parody of “Sinners” featuring Colom’s twin brother. It reported Colom raised substantially more money than Hyde-Smith.

Issues and Political Implications

The AP reported voter concerns about living costs, inflation, the war with Iran and government corruption. AP Voter Poll findings indicated many voters blamed the Trump administration for high costs and wanted Congress to provide stronger checks on the president.

The AP also noted Democrats faced weak overall favorability and pressure to show how they would use their majority. The polling provides context, not a single explanation for every state’s result. Mississippi remained unresolved. Its narrow margin, outstanding affidavit ballots and opposing campaign expectations meant the contest had not been settled in the updates cited here.

Senate Majority Changes the Political Landscape

Democrats’ Senate majority reshapes the balance between Congress and the White House for the remainder of President Trump’s term. The national result has been reported, but the Mississippi contest was still unresolved in the updates examined. Its outstanding ballots and narrow margin mean that Colom’s lead should not be described as a confirmed victory.

Dharma, Politics and Public Welfare

The 2026 Senate elections highlight the importance of accountability and public welfare. According to the spiritual teachings of Tatvdarshi Sant Rampal Ji Maharaj, people should prioritise Dharma Niti—righteous conduct, truth and humanity—rather than political divisions or personal interests.
