If you have ever Google-searched ‘What is cryptocurrency?’ and only ended up more confused than before, you are not alone. Many explanations assume you already understand complex financial and technical concepts. This guide takes a different approach. Before we talk about Bitcoin, blockchain or digital wallets, let us forget that cryptocurrency even exists. Instead, imagine you are five years old, sitting in a classroom with a box of chocolates and a teacher holding a notebook. Surprisingly, that is all you need to understand one of the biggest financial innovations of the 21st century.

Uncomplicating Cryptocurrency: Let Us Start at the Beginning

Most explanations about cryptocurrency begin with technical terms like blockchain, decentralisation, cryptography, etc. to name  a few. But learning something new is much easier when you understand why it exists before learning how it works.

So, for the next few minutes, let us forget everything you have heard or read about cryptocurrency so far. We will begin with a simple story. It may seem to have nothing to do with Bitcoin at first, but every part of it will eventually lead us to understanding how cryptocurrency really works.

But before we begin the main story of children with chocolates, let us live through the story of a small civilisation that resided in a village.

Let Us Visit a Small Village

There was a tiny village with only twenty people. Each of those twenty had a unique profession. One person grew rice. Another made shoes. Someone stitched clothes, someone baked bread and someone built houses. Everyone had something useful.

Whenever someone needed something, they simply exchanged it. The shoemaker gave shoes to the farmer. The farmer gave rice to the shoemaker. However, this exchange of goods or barter, as we know it, seems easy but was not always.

One day, the shoemaker wanted rice. He went to the farmer. The shoemaker said, ‘I’ll give you these lovely shoes’. The farmer smiled and replied, ‘I already have shoes’. Now the shoemaker had a problem. He had something valuable. Unfortunately, shoes were not what the farmer needed at that moment.

This is how people traded thousands of years ago and it was not always easy.

The Need to Invent Money

The villagers gathered together. ‘We need something, they said, ‘that everyone is happy to accept’.

Someone suggested leaves. But it was rejected as the leaves dry up. Then someone suggested bananas. It was also rejected as banana rots. Next, someone suggested stones. They were rejected as there were too many stones.

Then someone held up a shiny piece of gold. Gold did not rot. It did not rust. It was difficult to find. It was practical because it could be divided for both small and large transactions. And most importantly, everyone agreed it was valuable. Thus Gold became money.

What is noteworthy here? People did not trust gold at that time because it was magical. They trusted gold because they believed everyone else would trust gold too.

In reality, money was built on trust.

The King’s Notebook

Years passed. Trading became easier. Eventually, instead of everyone carrying bags of gold everywhere, a king said, ‘Leave your gold with me. I will keep it safe’.

Everyone agreed. The king took all the gold and wrote everything down in one big notebook. He wrote that Anil owns ten gold coins, Dilip owns six, Umesh owns twenty coins, and so on.

Whenever someone spent money, the king simply changed the notebook. Nobody carried heavy gold anymore. The notebook became more important than the gold itself.

This is surprisingly similar to how modern banking works. When you look at your bank balance today, it is not usually a pile of notes waiting with your name on it. It is a record. Although the money stays in the bank, you remain free to withdraw it whenever you choose to.

Then Something Went Wrong

One night, the king secretly opened the notebook. He smiled to himself, chuckling, ‘I am the only one who owns this notebook’. He quietly wrote that the King now owns 10,000 gold coins.

The next morning, nobody knew what had happened. The villagers were angry when they saw the notebook.’That is cheating!’, they said. The king shrugged and replied, ‘It is my notebook’.

Sadly, the villagers could not prove anything.

An Idea

One little girl had an idea. She raised her hand. ‘Why does only the king have the notebook?’, she questioned. Everyone looked at her.

Nobody had ever asked that question. Then, she continued, ‘Why don’t all of us have the same notebook?’

There was silence. And then, everyone made their own copy. Now every villager had exactly the same notebook. Whenever something changed, everyone updated their copy together.

Nobody could secretly change yesterday’s pages anymore. This shared notebook is the basic idea behind a blockchain.

A blockchain is simply a notebook that thousands of computers share together instead of one person controlling it.

So What Is Cryptocurrency?

This is where many beginners get confused. The notebook is not the cryptocurrency.

Now, let us imagine the notebook says ‘Dilip owns five chocolates’. Those chocolates are the cryptocurrency. The notebook simply keeps track of who owns them.

  • Bitcoin is like the chocolates.
  • Blockchain is the notebook.

They are connected, but they are not the same thing.

Who Owns the Notebook?

Nobody owns it. This is the unusual part one needs to understand for a better understanding of how cryptocurrency works.

Therefore, instead of one king or one bank, thousands of computers around the world each keep their own copy. These computers are called nodes.

Understand this as children sitting in a classroom. Every child has the same notebook. If one child spills juice all over their notebook, still nothing is lost in terms of the data. The other children still have theirs.

The damaged notebook can simply be copied again. This is one reason blockchains are designed to be resilient.

But What If Someone Cheats?

Imagine one student suddenly shouts, ‘I have one thousand chocolates!’ Everyone checks their notebooks. They all respond, ‘No you don’t’.

Now this student’s notebook is different from everyone else’s. So everyone ignores his version. Only the notebook that matches the shared record is accepted.

Everything you’ve learnt so far leads to this important concept of blockchain. Changing your own copy does not change everyone else’s.

Then Comes the Clever Question

Further, a child asks, ‘But what if someone brings thousands of fake children?’. Now they could outvote everyone else. That would break everything.

Bitcoin’s creator thought about this too. Instead of allowing anyone to vote for free, Bitcoin requires special computers to perform difficult computational work before they can help add new pages to the notebook.

This process is called mining. Mining does not create gold underground. It is simply one way the Bitcoin network decides who gets to write the next page of the shared notebook while making cheating expensive.

Where is an Individual’s Bitcoin?

Another common misunderstanding is this –  people think Bitcoin lives inside a wallet. Not quite literally.

Let us take a scenario – all the chocolates always remain written inside the notebook. Your wallet does not hold the chocolates. It holds the secret key that proves certain chocolates belong to you. This is why your private key is so important.

If your private key falls into the wrong hands, your cryptocurrency can be controlled by someone else. If one loses it, recovering access may be impossible.

On the other hand, your public address is like your home address. You can safely give it to people who want to send you cryptocurrency. But you should never give away your private key.

Who Decides Bitcoin’s Price?

Moving to the next scenario, imagine there is only one toy dinosaur and three children want it.

One offers 100. Another offers INR 500. A third person offers INR 1,000. Now, the owner sells it for INR1,000. So who decided the price?

The buyers and sellers did. It is similar to how one would enlist an object they would like to sell in an online market place like Ebay, Amazon or OLX. Any buyer willing to purchase the object at the stated price will go ahead and buy it.

Bitcoin works in much the same way. Its price changes because people continuously decide how much they are willing to pay or accept.

Why Can’t They Just Make More Bitcoin?

This is also important to understand. Suppose a teacher gives every child one hundred stars. Tomorrow she suddenly gives everyone another million stars.

Would the stars still feel special? Probably not.

Bitcoin has a rule. There can only ever be 21 million Bitcoins. Supporters believe this limited supply is one reason Bitcoin may retain value over time, though price still depends on market demand. However, this does not mean that there are no real issues or security questions that sellers and especially buyers face while dealing in bitcoins.

Is Cryptocurrency Perfect?

A clear no; and understanding this is just as important as understanding the technology itself.

Let us go back to our classroom. Students are playing and the teacher watches everyone. If one student says, ‘He took my toy!’

The teacher listens. She investigates and if someone cheated, she can help fix the problem.

Banks often perform a similar role. Depending on the situation, they may investigate fraud, reverse certain transactions or work with law enforcement.

Suppose in a scenario as such: there is no teacher. Only the notebook. Now, when a student says, ‘I was tricked’. Everyone replies, ‘What does the notebook say?’

Upon checking the notebook, everyone says, ‘The notebook says you gave away the toy’. The student replies, ‘But I was fooled!’ Here is where a big problem lies.

The notebook cannot tell whether someone lied. It only records what happened according to its rules. This is one of the biggest trade-offs in cryptocurrency.

Removing the central authority also removes its ability to resolve many disputes.

Why Do Crypto Scams Happen?

Many people think the blockchain itself gets hacked. However, industry insiders refute this and say that most of the time, that is not what happens.

They believe that scammers trick people into giving away their private keys, sending cryptocurrency voluntarily or investing in fake projects.

According to the industry experts, the technology may work exactly as designed, but the fraud happens because humans can still deceive other humans.

Whether or not this is true, the trust factor around cryptocurrency definitely remains lower compared to the traditional banking systems.

Money Rules Us More Than We Realise

If, at the end of all this discussion, you have come to conclude that crypto is nothing but imaginary money just written in some digital ledgers. Then you are not wrong. Can this money be used? Yes it can. Can you purchase things with cryptocurrency? Yes that also you can. Then where is the problem? Trust is the problem here.

With traditional money, we largely trust banks, governments and legal systems. Whereas, with cryptocurrency, people place more trust in mathematics, computer code, the shared network and their own responsibility to protect their private keys.

Why do humans trust money so much? In a quest to earn more money, have better facilities, lead a better life? In the pursuit of wealth, comfort and a better life, we’ve become so attached to money that we’re willing to assign value even to something we cannot see or touch. Fraud exists in both traditional finance and cryptocurrency, though it remains more prevalent in the latter. And yet millions continue to embrace it.

Despite the growing crypto frauds, it still doesn’t deter people from using cryptocurrency. Why? Money has enslaved us so much that we actually do not realise we are being robbed of our true wealth – a loss that is irreparable.

The Greatest Wealth You Already Possess

Why are most people unaware of the greatest wealth they already possess – the wealth they are born with? It is because they have not found the refuge of a Complete Saint (Tatvdarshi Sant). Only a Tatvdarshi Sant can awaken a soul to the priceless spiritual wealth it carries from birth and explain how failing to use it wisely leads to irreversible consequences.

Jagatguru Tatvdarshi Sant Rampal Ji Maharaj explains that every soul begins life with two invaluable treasures. The first is a fixed number of breaths, which determines the duration of one’s life. The second is the accumulated wealth of past-life good karma, which shapes the quality of that life. Unaware of these priceless assets, people spend their entire lives chasing material riches that remain behind after death, while neglecting the spiritual wealth that alone accompanies the soul into its next journey.

Sant Rampal Ji Maharaj further explains that every single breath becomes truly valuable only when it is devoted to chanting the authentic Satnaam (True Mantra) bestowed by a Tatvdarshi Sant. This is the real ‘mining’ every human being should undertake, not to generate digital wealth, but to erase the karmic debts of countless past lives and accumulate the eternal wealth of good karma. Unlike worldly riches, this spiritual treasure remains with the soul beyond death and ultimately leads it towards complete liberation through the true worship of Supreme God Kabir.

In the present age, Jagatguru Tatvdarshi Sant Rampal Ji Maharaj is the only Tatvdarshi Sant Who imparts this authentic path of worship, enabling disciples to transform their karmic destiny and end the soul’s continuous journey through countless lifetimes.
