The Government of India has officially announced the nationwide implementation of the Viksit Bharat – Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission Gramin (VB-G RAM-G) Act, 2025, a major rural employment initiative under the Viksit Bharat vision. Effective from 1st July 2026, the legislation aims to strengthen livelihood security by expanding the statutory rural employment guarantee for eligible households. VB-G RAM-G Act Highlights
- The VB-G RAM-G Act 2025 was passed in December 2025 by the Parliament of India and subsequently approved by the President of India too.
- Implementation details for the new legislation were presented on 30 June 2026 during a briefing conducted by Union Minister for Rural Development and Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare Shivraj Singh Chouhan.
- There already exists a rural employment Act in India – MGNREGA.
- The new VB-G RAM-G Act 2026 will now replace the older rural Act, effective 1st June 2026 onward.
- The Government of India has increased its rural employment guarantee from the already-existing 100 days to 125 days in a bid to provide more employment in the rural sectors under the Viksit Bharat program.
- While the VB-G RAM-G Act 2025 comes into action 1st July 2026 onward, its official nationwide launch will be conducted in Mukkavaripalli village in Andhra Pradesh on 2nd July 2026.
Viksit Bharat – Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin) Act 2025
India has taken a significant step towards strengthening rural livelihoods with the nationwide implementation of the Viksit Bharat – Guarantee for Employment and Livelihood Mission (Rural) [VB-G RAM-G] Act, 2025, which comes into effect from 1st July 2026.
- As per the PIB press release, the new legislation replaces the earlier framework by expanding the statutory employment guarantee for eligible rural households from 100 days to 125 days annually, aiming to enhance livelihood security and accelerate sustainable rural development.
- As preparations for the new legislation concluded, Union Minister for Rural Development and Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan said the government’s priority was to ensure that the transition takes place without affecting employment opportunities available to eligible rural households.
- The VB-G RAM-G 2025 Act now replaces the already-existing MGNREGA (Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act) that was the earlier Gramin Ajeevika provision passed by the erstwhile legislation.
Rural Employment Guarantee Increased to 125 Days
One of the most notable provisions under the VB-G RAM-G Act is the increase in the legal employment guarantee from 100 days to 125 days for eligible rural families. According to the government, this expansion is intended to provide stronger livelihood support, create durable community assets and contribute towards the broader vision of a developed India.
The Ministry stated that the legislation is designed to strengthen rural employment opportunities while supporting long-term economic resilience across villages.
Government Completes Administrative and Financial Preparations
Before the Act came into force, the Central Government, in coordination with state governments and Union Territories, completed all necessary administrative, financial and technical preparations for its smooth implementation July 2026 onward.
Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan said that ensuring uninterrupted employment for every eligible rural worker remains the government’s highest priority. He added that sufficient financial resources have already been made available and the required systems are fully prepared so that existing development works continue without disruption.
INR 95,692.31 Crore Allocated to States and Union Territories
To facilitate seamless implementation from the very first day, the Central Government has already allocated an interim amount of INR 95,692.31 crore to states and Union Territories.
The allocation is expected to help ensure:
- Timely availability of employment opportunities
- Prompt payment of wages to workers
- Continuation of ongoing development projects without interruption
The government stated that this financial support has been released in advance to prevent delays during the transition to the new legislative framework.

Existing Job Cards to Remain Valid During Transition to VB-G RAM-G Act 2025
The government has also introduced measures to ensure a smooth transition from the previous system.
- Workers who have completed their e-KYC will be allowed to continue using their existing job cards until new Rural Employment Guarantee Cards are issued.
- This arrangement has been made to ensure there is no disruption in employment opportunities or wage payments during the implementation phase.
- Existing works already underway will also continue without interruption.
Gram Panchayats to Play a Larger Role in Rural Development
Under the VB-G RAM-G Act, 2025, Gram Panchayats have been entrusted with a more prominent role in identifying local development priorities and overseeing the execution of rural projects.
- The legislation adopts an integrated approach that combines employment generation with the creation of long-lasting public assets and environmentally sustainable development.
- The framework supports a broad range of initiatives, including strengthening rural infrastructure, conserving water and other natural resources, encouraging agriculture and allied sectors, and improving coordination among existing government welfare programmes.
- It also seeks to expand the participation of women’s Self-Help Groups (SHGs) in rural development activities while promoting the use of technology to enhance transparency, accountability and the efficient delivery of services.
By aligning employment opportunities with locally identified development needs, the Act aims to foster stronger village institutions, improve community infrastructure and contribute to sustainable rural growth over the long term.
States Express Readiness for Nationwide Rollout
The readiness of states and Union Territories to implement the VB-G RAM-G Act was assessed during the National Rural Development Conference held in New Delhi on 28th and 29th June 2026.
- The meeting brought together Rural Development Ministers from 29 states and Union Territories, where participants discussed implementation strategies and reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring the legislation is executed effectively at the village level.
- The Government stated that all 29 participating states and Union Territories have already earmarked funds for the programme, while 24 states have completed the formal notification process required for its implementation.
- As part of the conference proceedings, implementation guidelines for the VB-G RAM-G Act were introduced by Union Minister for Rural Development and Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare Shivraj Singh Chouhan, offering administrative direction to support the Act’s rollout across the country from 1 July 2026.
National Launch Ceremony Scheduled in Andhra Pradesh
Although the Act becomes operational nationwide on 1st July 2026, its official national launch ceremony will take place on 2nd July 2026 in Mukkavaripalli village, Obulavaripalle Mandal, Tirupati district of Andhra Pradesh.
- The programme will be inaugurated by Union Minister Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan in the presence of Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Shri N. Chandrababu Naidu, Deputy Chief Minister Shri Konidala Pawan Kalyan, Union Minister of State Dr. Chandrasekhar Pemmasani, Shri Kamlesh Paswan and other dignitaries.
- During the event, beneficiaries will receive Rural Employment Guarantee Cards.
- The government will also formally launch the VB-G RAM-G Mission, screen an awareness film, and release a compendium of op-ed articles related to the mission.
