Maharashtra CM Eknath Shinde Unveils Pod Taxi System in Mumbai's BKC to Boost Urban Mobility

Pod Taxi System: Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has recently announced the introduction of a pod taxi system in Mumbai’s Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC), modeled after the London pod taxi system. This futuristic mode of transportation is expected to significantly enhance urban mobility, addressing both traffic congestion and last-mile connectivity in one of Mumbai’s busiest business districts.

What are pod taxis?

Pod taxis, also known as Personal Rapid Transit (PRT), are small automated driverless vehicles which can carry passengers on demand. Pods are electronic means of transportation systems that are eco-friendly and more sustainable.

Project Details and Vision

The pod taxi system will consist of 21 autonomous vehicles covering a 3.9 km route within the BKC area. The pod taxi network will cover 8.80 km in Bandra Kurla Complex, with 38 stations along the route. The pods will be 3.5 meters long, 1.47 meters wide, and 1.8 meters tall, with a maximum speed of 40 kmph and a capacity of about six passengers per pod.

Chief Minister Shinde emphasized that this system, developed by Sai Green Mobility in partnership with Ultra PRT, the creators of the pod taxi at London’s Heathrow Airport, will be a model for future sustainable urban transport projects in India. It is aimed at decongesting the area and providing a faster, more efficient mode of transport, benefiting both corporate commuters and visitors to the region.

Dr. Sanjay Mukherjee, Metropolitan Commissioner of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), highlighted the potential of the project to transform daily commutes in the area. The feasibility study for the project was completed in March 2024, and the project is now moving forward with construction and deployment.

Pod taxis Impact on Urban Mobility

The BKC Pod Taxi system, spanning 8.8 kilometers, will connect key points such as the Bandra and Kurla railway stations and the BKC Park & Ride facility, providing seamless transport options. Shinde expressed confidence that this project will not only solve the traffic congestion problem in the area but also act as a model for other Indian cities.

Fare Structure and Competition

The fare structure for the pod taxi service will be competitive with local auto-rickshaws and taxis. Currently, auto-rickshaw fares in the area average ₹15.33 per kilometer, while taxis charge approximately ₹18.67 per kilometer. The pod taxi fare is expected to offer a cost-effective and efficient alternative for commuters who currently rely on app-based taxi services, which can cost between ₹80 and ₹100 for short trips.

Sustainable Transport and Future Prospects

Praveen Khandelwal of the Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) applauded the initiative, highlighting its potential to address the growing traffic problem in megacities while promoting eco-friendly transportation solutions. The pod taxi project aligns with Chief Minister Shinde’s vision of making Mumbai a model for green transport solutions in India.
