- On Wednesday, 16th October 2024, Omar Abdullah took the oath as the first Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir UT after his party National Conference managed to secure 42 seats in the recently concluded elections.
- Since 2018, Jammu and Kashmir has been governed by President rule. The rule was enacted after BJP drew out its support from its coalition government with People’s Democratic Alliance.
- President rule was recently revoked after the declaration of results of concluded elections, giving way to formation of a new government.
- Omar Abdullah and his fellow cabinet ministers’ oath to office were administered by LG Manoj Sinha at Sher-i-Kashmir International Convention Centre (SKICC).
- Javed Ahmed Rana (Mendhar), Javid Ahmad Dar (Rafiabad), Sakina Itoo (DH Pora), and Surinder Kumar Chowdhary were administered the oath by LG Manoj Sinha.
- This is the first time a Chief Minister has been elected since the abolition of Article 370 in the region.
- PM Narendra Modi on his official X handle, appreciated his appointment and assured to work in collaboration for the progress of Jammu and Kashmir.
- Other political leaders, like Rajnath Singh, Rahul Gandhi, Arvind Kejriwal, and Mamta Banerjee also wrote on the social media platform X about his appointment as the Chief Minister.
- In one of his initial orders, he focused on reducing public inconvenience by instructing the police to avoid creating green corridors for his road movements. He also urged his cabinet ministers to follow the same protocol.
