The Path of Non-Violent Struggle Began in South Africa

The time Mahatma Gandhi spent in South Africa played a crucial role in shaping his ideas on non-violence and *Satyagraha*. Upon arriving there in 1893 for a legal case, Gandhi faced racial discrimination. During a journey to Pretoria, he was ordered to leave a first-class train compartment. When he protested, he was forced to spend the night at Pietermaritzburg station.

These incidents gave Gandhi the opportunity to understand the broader social system underlying the personal racial discrimination he faced. To fight this injustice, he chose the path of truth, non-violence, and peaceful resistance rather than violence. It was during this period that the concept of “Satyagraha” evolved, eventually laying the foundation for his political life.

After returning to India, Gandhi linked this philosophy to mass movements. The Dandi March of 1930 and the Quit India Movement of 1942 are prime examples of this. The impact of Gandhi’s non-violent struggle was not confined to India; it extended beyond its borders, inspiring numerous social movements across the world.

Gandhi’s Ideas and Modern India

Gandhi’s philosophy was not limited merely to the freedom movement.  Cleanliness, rural development, self-reliance, local production, and social equality were also key components of his philosophy. Even in modern India, many government programs are aligned with these ideas.

The Swachh Bharat Mission, launched on Gandhi Jayanti in 2014, transformed cleanliness into a massive public movement. Similarly, community participation and economic empowerment are being fostered through self-help groups and rural livelihood programs. The Khadi and Village Industries sector advances Gandhi’s “Swadeshi” (indigenous) vision by promoting local production and employment.

Schemes such as SVAMITVA-aimed at streamlining rural property rights-and MGNREGA-which provides employment to rural households-are also inspired by Gandhian concepts of rural development and dignified labor.

Discussion of Gandhi’s Ideas at the United Nations

Gandhi’s ideology is also frequently commemorated on the global stage. In September 2022, UNESCO’s Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Education for Peace and Sustainable Development, in collaboration with India’s Permanent Mission to the UN, organized the fifth ‘Ahinsa’ (Non-violence) Lecture at the United Nations. The event, themed “Education for Human Flourishing,” emphasized integrating empathy, ethics, and human values alongside knowledge in education.

Another instance of Gandhi’s global legacy was evident during the 2023 G20 Summit in New Delhi, where leaders from various nations visited Rajghat to pay their tributes.o

Commemoration Across the World

Gandhi’s legacy extends far beyond India. Statues and memorials dedicated to him have been established in numerous countries-including the USA, Belgium, Spain, Serbia, Switzerland, Thailand, Kazakhstan, and the Netherlands-where cultural events are also organized in his honor. Through these events, Gandhi’s message of non-violence and peace is commemorated on an international scale.

In September 2024, a special railway coach exhibition dedicated to Gandhi’s train journeys was inaugurated at the Gandhi Darshan complex in New Delhi. Gandhi had traveled across various parts of the country to understand India and connect with the common people. This exhibition brings the legacy of these journeys and his engagement with the masses to the public eye.

The Relevance of Non-violence in a Changing World

Today, the world is grappling with challenges such as war, social tension, inequality, terrorism, and climate change. In such times, the International Day of Non-Violence offers an opportunity to recall Gandhi’s philosophy, which emphasized resolving conflicts through dialogue, truth, and peaceful resistance.

Therefore, October 2nd is not merely Gandhi Jayanti; it is also a day to propagate the message of peace and non-violence globally. Gandhi’s legacy reminds us that moral courage, public participation, and human empathy can be vital tools for social and political change.

How will the India of Gandhi’s dreams be realized?

Mahatma Gandhi envisioned an India that was clean, healthy, corruption-free, developed, and self-reliant. How, then, will this dream of Gandhi be fulfilled? Today, a great visionary has emerged in India who is not only realizing Gandhi’s dream but also making significant contributions to the betterment of human life.

This great visionary is none other than the enlightened Saint Rampal Ji Maharaj. Through his relentless struggle and efforts, he is actively bringing to fruition the vision of a clean, healthy, corruption-free, and hypocrisy-free India. Saint Rampal Ji Maharaj’s work in spiritual upliftment and social service is so profound that there is no other social reformer like him in the country or across the globe today.

Through his ‘Annapurna’ campaign, Saint Rampal Ji Maharaj provides homes to the homeless, support to destitute families, free healthcare to the sick, and free seeds, fertilizers, and pesticides to farmers. By assisting farmers, laborers, and impoverished families, Saint Rampal Ji Maharaj is striving ceaselessly for the holistic upliftment of society-going far beyond Gandhi’s own ideals and actions-and is certain to build the India of Gandhi’s dreams.
