India has implemented four new labor codes effective November 21, 2025, consolidating 29 existing laws to reform wages, social security, industrial relations, and workplace safety. Key changes include extended social security for all workers, including gig and platform workers, new provisions for timely wage payments, and improved rights for women, such as working night shifts and receiving equal pay.

What are the new labor laws in 2025?

India has merged 29 separate labour laws into four simplified labour codes – one of the biggest labour reforms in its history. What are workers’ rights?

Labor rights or workers’ rights are both legal rights and human rights related to the labor relationship between workers and employers.   • Minimum Wage for All Workers  Now guarantees minimum payment to workers regardless of industry, sector, or type of company.

  • Gratuity now after less service  Many contract/fixed-term workers, who were previously eligible for gratuity after 5 years of service, can now get it only after 1 year.
  • Social Security + Health and Welfare for All Extension of PF/ESI, welfare schemes, health facilities to all regular employees, unorganized, contract, migrant, gig and platform workers. 
  • Workers’ rights and a safe work environment  things like working hours, worker safety rules, appointment letters, worker identification, legal recognition, etc. are now in place.
  • Fixed benefits for contract/fixed-term workers too  Just like permanent workers, fixed-term employees and contract workers need to get salaries, benefits on salaries, and social security.
