Nimisha Priya, a Kerala based Indian origin nurse, who was working in Yemen, is now scheduled to be executed on July 16 as per the final orders from the country’s judiciary. She is convicted of murdering a Yemeni national, who was her business partner earlier. This short article will explain the story and give updates to the story of Nimisha Priya’s execution.
Who is Nimisha Priya?
- Nimisha Priya, a resident of Palakkad district, Kerala, is an Indian nurse who was working in Yemen.
- She arrived in Yemen in 2011 with her family.
- She came to Yemen to work as a nurse. In 2014, her husband and daughter went back to India because of financial issues and increasing civil unrest in the region.
- She partnered with a Yemeni national named Talal Abdo Mahdi for opening up a clinic – a legal requirement of the authorities in Yemen is a local national as a partner for foreign medical practitioners.
What Priya Claims
- However, there are multiple stories of what Priya claims about the incident. But the one thing which is common in all the stories is that Mahdi used to harass and threaten her.
- Mahdi even took her passport and denied giving her back. Some stories claim that Mahdi used to practice physical abuse and harassment with her and she didn’t get any local support.
- Some stories claim that Mahdi was arrested by the Police on her complaint of his physical abuse and on his return, he started harassing her. He even withheld her passport as well.
- Mahdi was making it difficult for her to return back to India.
How the murder happened
- In 2017, in order to recover the passport from him, Priya sedated him. However, the dose of sedation was more than normal, leading to Mahdi’s death.
- Priya along with a Yemeni woman named Hanan, disposed of Mahdi’s body in a water tank after chopping up his body. She had planned to escape Yemen, but she was arrested.
- In 2018, Priya was convicted of the murder. In 2020, she was sentenced to death by the trial court.
- In 2023, Mahdi al-Mashat, the President of Houthis Supreme Political Council approved the decision.
- She is currently in the central Jail of Sanaa, Yemen’s capital city.
The Only Escape Through Law in Yemen
- As per the law in Yemen, the only way to escape is by offering ‘Diya’ or blood money to the family of the victim. If the family accepts, Priya can escape her execution.
- Prema Kumari has travelled to Yemen after selling her house in India. She is trying her best for her daughter to escape this execution.
- But despite various efforts and crowdfunding, the victim’s family has not accepted the blood money.
- Her mother has nominated Samuel Jerome as their lawyer for negotiating with the victim’s family. They have offered $1m to the Mahdi’s family but they haven’t accepted it yet.
India’s MEA Response
- MEA has been closely monitoring the case of her execution and trying their best so that it can be avoided through negotiations before July 16.
- The Supreme Judicial Council under the control of Houthis gave the final stamp on the verdict of her execution.
- Because of a lack of sources of communications with the Houthis, the negotiations are becoming difficult for the Ministry of External Affairs.
- There is no clarity in any update as of now from the MEA.

Any substance – whether money or any other item – obtained through unauthorised means is not going to stay forever. But the bad karmas incurred becomes part of your destiny thereafter.
Ignoring these vital facts and truths embedded in our holy scriptures, people are marching aggressively and committing sins without even thinking of the consequences that awaits them. For more such deeper spiritual insights, visit –
