Japan’s Toyota and US-based Joby Aviation successfully completed Japan’s first electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft trial at Toyota Higashi-Fuji Technical Center in Shizuoka. This marks Joby Aviation’s first test flight outside the United States.

“While the weather wasn’t on our side today, our team successfully conducted several exhibition flights, marking our first flights outside the United States. It’s an incredible milestone for our journey,” said Bevirt.
Hiroki Nakajima, Toyota’s Chief Technology Officer, shared his enthusiasm
“We are here to celebrate Joby’s first successful flight in Japan. The vision of air mobility we have shared is finally taking shape,” Nakajima remarked.
Toyota-Joby Agreement
In 2023, Toyota and Joby Aviation solidified a long-term partnership, beginning with a $394 million investment from Toyota. The collaboration includes Toyota engineers working alongside the Joby team in California. Additionally, Toyota committed an extra $500 million to support Joby’s commercial production and certification, bringing the total investment to $894 million.

Founded in 2009, Joby Aviation has completed thousands of test flights and raised over $2 billion from investors, including Toyota, Delta Air Lines, SK Telecom, and Uber. The Joby eVTOL is designed to carry a pilot and four passengers at speeds up to 200 mph. A trip from Shizuoka to Tokyo would take only 25 minutes, compared to a two-hour drive, reducing traffic congestion and environmental impact.
