What is Human DNA ?

The genetic material of the human body is the DNA. It contains information for the transfer of characters from the parents to the offspring. Additionally, it contains information required for the growth, survival, development and reproduction of the human body.

Structure of the Human DNA

Double helical model is the most accepted model for the structure of DNA. Double helical model was given by James Watson and Francis Crick in 1953.

According to the double helical structure:

●      Human DNA is made up of two polynucleotide chains which are antiparallel in polarity.

●      Each polynucleotide chain consists of 3.3× 10⁹ nucleotides (nearly 3 billion nucleotides). Remember the number of polynucleotide sequences is the characteristic of an organism.

●      A nucleotide consists of a Deoxyribose sugar, phosphate group and a nitrogenous base (which can be either a purine or pyrimidine).

●      The two polynucleotide chains are coiled in a form of helix and each helix has a pitch of 3.4 nm.

●      There are 10 nucleotides in each strand of a polynucleotide chain.

●      The nitrogenous bases of one chain are connected to that of the other chain by hydrogen bonds. 

Human Genetic Disorders

Human Genetic Disorders are the disorders which are genetically transferred from the parents to the offspring. These are inborn disorders (which occur by birth). Most of the genetic disorders are incurable as we do not have any technology which can alter the nucleotides of the human DNA. These types of diseases can only be treated or managed upto certain level. Some of the genetic disorders are down syndrome, thalassemia, tay- sachs disease, sickle cell anemia, cystic fibrosis etc.

Human Genome Project (HGP) 

This Mega Project was started in 1990 by the contribution of many researchers. It was a 13 year mega project which aimed to sequence human DNA. It was completed by 2003 but the details of the human DNA are still waiting to be discovered. The Human Genome Project unveiled the salient features of the Human DNA. HGP provided the knowledge that 99.9% of the DNA is the same in all humans. Only 1% of the variable DNA is the characteristic of every human.

Scope for Further Research

Information of the nucleotide sequences of the human DNA provide scope for further research in the areas of biotechnology, medicine and human welfare. Scientists with the modification of certain non-human genomes (microorganisms including virus, bacteria and other animals) are able to manufacture products for human welfare.
