The butterfly Effect is a type of effect or theory in physics which affirms how small and minor changes in the solar system can lead to unfortunate circumstances. This Butterfly Effect was first derived by the mathematician “Edward Lorenz” in 1963.
What is the Butterfly Effect?
This Butterfly Effect tells us how our current decisions can affect our whole life. Deep down this effect is very mysterious. Imagine a simple sentence “The movement of a butterfly’s wings in Brazil can make a chain of events in Texas.”
How was the Butterfly Effect discovered?
As Edward Lorenz was working on a weather simulation, he took Wind, Temperature and Humidity into consideration. But while calculating he didn’t take the exact readings which affected his predictions in weather simulation. (Example: Imagine the reading was 0.234596, he took it as 0.234)
How does The Butterfly Effect work?
This Butterfly Effect is the consequence of chaos theory. This concept is difficult to understand. The complex systems have some interconnection with each other and they work in a non-linear manner. In simple words, any small interrupted movement can cause a huge difference.
An Example of Butterfly Effect
When Thomas Edison was a young boy, he struggled in traditional schooling. His teachers found him to be difficult to handle, and he was often considered a slow learner. One day, young Edison came home from school with a sealed letter for his mother. He didn’t know what was written inside but handed it to her and waited. Her mom read the letter. When Edison asked what the letter said, she smiled through her tears and replied, “Your son is a genius. This school is too small for him and doesn’t have enough good teachers to train him. Please teach him yourself.”
From that day on, his mom took it upon herself to educate her son at home. Her belief in his potential played a critical role in his development. Later, Edison became one of the greatest inventors in history. Many years later, Edison found the letter again, hidden in a drawer. When he opened it, he discovered that the letter didn’t say what his mother had told him. Instead, it read, “Your son is addled [mentally ill]. We won’t let him attend school anymore.” This tells us how the butterfly effect can change our lives.
Conclusion
Butterfly Effect is a perfect example of “Connecting Dots”, all our actions are interconnected to each other. This theory also tells us why accurate future predictions are difficult.
