What was Black Death?
The Black Death was a catastrophic outbreak of plague that spread across Asia, Europe, and North Africa during the 14th century. The Black Death was caused by Yersinia pestis; a bacteria associated with the infected fleas and rodents.
It is assumed to have originated from Central Asia and readily spread westward by extensive travel and trade networks. The plague reached the Mediterranean region from Asia through Merchant ships, caravans, infected rats and fleas. From the Mediterranean, it quickly spread throughout Europe. The overcrowded cities, poor sanitation and minimal medical knowledge worsened the condition.
