Gregor Johann Mendel, an Augustinian priest and the late nineteenth century scientist is entitled as the ‘Father of Genetics’. Mendel performed several experiments on garden pea (pisum sativum) for seven years from 1856-1863 and gave the ‘theory of inheritance’.
Mendel performed many artificial hybridization experiments to give the famous ‘laws of inheritance’ which governs the transmission of characters from parents to the offsprings. Mendel took seven pairs of contrasting characters such as plant height, seed colour and shape, flower colour and position, pod colour and shape.The idea of ‘genes’ as the ‘unit of inheritance’ is also given by Mendel.

DNA or Deoxyribonucleic Acid is the genetic material in all the organisms including plants. DNA, in the plants, is the genetic material as it contains information required for the transmission of characters from parents to the offsprings. A segment of DNA is known as ‘gene’. ● Biolistics: Commonly known as ‘Gene Gun’ is the method of microprojectile bombardment. This method involves the direct bombardment of high energy particles or radiation into the gene of interest directly inside the plant cells.
