Karnataka State Wildlife Board: Defers Mining Licence Proposals
Karnataka, the fourth-largest mineral producer in India, contributing 12% to the country’s mineral production with 130 reporting mines, has seen the Karnataka State Wildlife Board defer proposals for new mining licenses around protected forest areas. This decision was made during a meeting held on Monday, October 7, chaired by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.
Investigation Directed
During the 16th State Wildlife Board meeting, it was decided to issue notices to halt illegal mining activities within a one-kilometer radius of the Kappatagudda Wildlife Sanctuary. An investigation into illegal mining was directed, with a factual report expected to be presented, alongside reviews of the Supreme Court’s orders and legal aspects. The board plans to reconsider the proposals in the next State Wildlife Board meeting.
Minister Khandre stated that the board approved the inclusion of Choradenahalli State Forest and Kayitotlu minor forest areas in the Bhadra Tiger Reserve buffer zone under the Bhadravati division. Additionally, the board declared the Hesaraghatta grassland area in Bengaluru as the Greater Hesaraghatta Grassland Conservation Reserve, a designation long sought after. A total of 5,010 acres have been approved for this declaration under Section 36A of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972.
The Role of Mining in country’s Development
Mining is crucial for developing countries, reducing dependence on foreign sources for raw materials needed in various industries. India’s rich biodiversity, varying seasons, and vast geography make it a significant source of numerous minerals.
