Delhi Air Pollution: Centre announces staggered timings for staff

The air quality in Delhi and the surrounding National Capital Region (NCR) remains a significant concern. As of today, the overall Air Quality Index (AQI) is 373, which falls into the “very poor” category. This level of pollution can cause serious health issues, especially for vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and those with pre-existing health conditions.

Delhi Air Pollution: Out of the 38 monitoring stations in Delhi, nine have reported AQI readings in the “severe” range, including areas like Anand Vihar, Bawana, Jahangirpuri, Mundka, Nehru Nagar, Shadipur, Sonia Vihar, Vivek Vihar, and Wazirpur. An AQI of 400 or higher is classified as “severe” and poses significant health risks.

In response to the high pollution levels, the Centre has announced staggered working hours for government employees to help reduce traffic congestion and minimize exposure to the polluted air. Offices can now operate from 9 AM to 5:30 PM or from 10 AM to 6:30 PM, and employees are encouraged to carpool or use public transport.

Specific measures to protect yourself and your family

Delhi Air Pollution: The air quality situation in Delhi and the NCR is indeed challenging. Here are some measures you can take to protect yourself and your family:

  • Stay Indoors: Limit outdoor activities, especially during peak pollution hours. Try to stay indoors as much as possible, particularly for children, the elderly, and those with respiratory issues.
  • Use Air Purifiers: Invest in good quality air purifiers for your home to reduce indoor pollution levels.
  • Wear Masks: When you need to go outside, wear N95 or N99 masks to filter out harmful particles.
  • Keep Windows Closed: Keep windows and doors closed to prevent outdoor air from entering your home.
  • Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water to help your body flush out toxins.
  • Use Public Transport or Carpool: Reduce your contribution to pollution by using public transport or carpooling whenever possible.
  • Monitor Air Quality: Keep an eye on the AQI levels and plan your activities accordingly. There are several apps and websites that provide real-time air quality updates.
