On Thursday, a team from the Enforcement Directorate (ED) was attacked during a raid on a farmhouse in the Bijwasan area of Delhi, where they were investigating a cyber fraud case. The raid was part of a larger investigation into cyber app fraud, and the target of the search was a chartered accountant (CA) believed to be linked to the illicit activities. The incident unfolded when the ED team arrived at the location, only to be confronted by the suspect, Ashok Sharma, and his family.
According to reports, five individuals were present during the raid, and one of them fled the scene. The ED team was allegedly attacked by Sharma and his relatives during the operation. As a result, one of the ED officers, identified as an additional director, suffered minor injuries. Despite being hurt, the official continued with the raid after receiving first aid treatment. The ED confirmed that an FIR was filed following the incident, and the premises were secured.
The ongoing investigation by the ED’s High-Intensity Unit (HIU) has uncovered a complex scheme involving the laundering of illicit funds generated through various cybercrimes. These include phishing scams, QR code frauds, and fraudulent part-time job offers that have affected thousands of people. The ED’s probe aims to track the flow of these illegally obtained funds and bring those involved to justice.
The attack on the ED team highlights the dangers faced by law enforcement agencies while investigating financial crimes, especially those involving sophisticated cyber fraud networks. In this case, the ED was acting on a tip-off related to financial crimes linked to the cyber app fraud, which has reportedly caused significant financial harm to victims.
The incident has raised concerns about the security of officials conducting high-risk investigations, particularly in cases involving organized cybercrime. While the ED continues its efforts to combat financial fraud, this attack underscores the challenges law enforcement faces in tackling complex and often dangerous criminal networks. The authorities are now focused on ensuring the safety of their officers while carrying out such critical investigations.
