Oprah Winfrey: Birth and Early Life

Oprah Winfrey’s original name is Orpah Gail Winfrey. She was born on January 29, 1954, in Kosciusko, Mississippi, United States, to a single teenage mother, Vernita Lee. Up to the age of six, she lived with her maternal grandmother, Hattie Mae Lee, on a farm in rural Mississippi. At the age of six, she was sent to live with her mother in inner-city Milwaukee, where she stayed until she was 14. This was a phase of hardship for her.

She was molested and abused by her cousin, uncle, and a family friend during this time. She became pregnant at 14 and ran away from home. Her son was born prematurely and died in infancy. Later, she was sent to live with her father, Vernon Winfrey, in Nashville, Tennessee.

Oprah Winfrey: Overcoming Struggle

When Oprah moved in with her father, Vernon Winfrey, in Nashville at age 14, her life took a dramatic turn for the better. Vernon provided a disciplined and structured environment, setting strict rules and placing a strong emphasis on education. Her father made it mandatory for her to read regularly, write the weekly book reports, and follow a curfew.

Under her father’s guidance, Oprah flourished. She performed great in academics, earning honors, and also participated in her school speech team. She was voted as the most popular girl at her high school. She also won a pageant, secured a scholarship at the college, and started her groundbreaking career in radio and television. It was her father’s support that led Oprah to a wonderful future.

The Path to Success: The Oprah Winfrey Show

After finishing high school, Oprah attended Tennessee State University on a full scholarship, where she majored in communications. While at Tennessee State University, Oprah started working at a radio station, WVOL. Later, she shifted to television as a news anchor at Nashville’s WLAC-TV. She was the youngest and the first Black female news anchor at this station.

Oprah soon made her way to talk shows. She went to Baltimore to co-host People Are Talking. Later, in 1984, Oprah moved to Chicago to host her life-changing show, AM Chicago.
