Now imagine this same situation happening across the nation. A major and strong UPI outage happened across the nation on Wednesday, 26th March, 2025, affecting millions of people throughout the nation at the same time. People without cash felt trapped as they couldn’t make the payment.

UPI payments on Wednesday, 26th March, faced a major setback after the platforms failed to respond to various transactions. Various platforms including Gpay, Phonepe and Paytm were the most affected. In no time, it caused a nationwide standstill in terms of financial transactions, symbolising a wide dependency on UPI payments.
According to Downdetector, the complaints regarding failed UPI transactions surged between 6 to 7 PM, causing chaos for businesses and individuals.

The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), which oversees India’s digital payment infrastructure, attributed the disruption to intermittent technical glitches resulting in transaction failures. However, as per NPCI’s official post on ‘X’, the issue was successfully resolved by 8:40 PM approximately and the system had stabilised.

- Over 80% of the complaints received were related to payment failures, while 14% were reported as fund transfer issues. - Many people faced issues in paying cab fares, metro tickets and auto-rickshaw rides, leading to frustration and delays.
Businesses
- The outage has particularly created trouble for small businesses, street vendors, and local merchants. Many shopkeepers reported losing customers as they were unable to make payments through UPIs.
- Auto-rickshaw, cab drivers who prefer UPI over cash lost several customers as they struggled to complete the UPI transaction due to the downtime.

As users started facing errors in UPI transactions, social media platforms like X, Instagram, and WhatsApp were flooded with complaints, with many expressing their frustration by tagging banks, NPCI, and payment service providers like Google Pay, Phonepe and Paytm.
- A ‘X’ user posted, “Most of us already stopped carrying liquid cash & this downtime has created a do or die situation. Elders were right about carrying cash.”
- Videos are going viral showing restaurant owners asking people to clean vessels as they couldn’t pay the money through UPI. These can be true or fake, no official source detected.
