India’s LPG Situation: Adequate Supply or Hidden Crisis?

LPG Cylinder Crisis in India: Currently, India is facing a huge Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) cylinder crisis, affecting a large number of households and small businesses across the nation.

Across several areas, people have reported the delays in cylinder refilling, long queues outside gas agencies, rising black market prices and disrupted businesses heavily dependent on LPG 

supply. This comes amid an increase in the interval of LPG booking from 21 to 25 days for households by the Ministry of Petroleum but the government officials urged the citizens not to panic as they have enough gas supplies. The ground realities show delays, discover details in our recent article.

The Main Causes that Triggered the LPG Crisis

The primary reason for the current LPG supply is the global disruption linked to tensions in West Asia, particularly involving the conflicts between the United States, Iran, and Israel. These tensions have disrupted the energy shipping routes from the Middle East, a major source of India’s fuel imports.

The tensions in the regions severely affected India’s fuel availability due to shipping delays and price fluctuations.

This disruption has led to:

• Delay in LPG cylinder tanker shipments
• Inflation in international fuel prices
• Hardships on India’s LPG distribution system

In order to ensure uninterrupted energy supply, the Government of India has expanded LPG fuel procurement to nearly 40 countries.

How has the Society been impacted by the LPG Crisis?

Several cities including Delhi, Noida, Lucknow, Bengaluru, Mumbai and Kolkata are impacted with the lack of LPG availability leading to long queues outside gas agencies and consumers rushing to secure cylinders amid fear of shortage.

Many small businesses including restaurants are significantly affected as the shortage of LPG supply slowed their businesses.

In few cities like Bengaluru and Mumbai, restaurants and food outlets are exploring alternative ways such as wood, charcoal, and coal stoves. Few restaurant owners have to temporarily close down their businesses if the situation persists.

Panic Amongst Consumers and Black Marketing 

In some regions of the nation, the demand for LPG cylinder bookings doubled as households started storing extra cylinders and that has created a situation of panic amongst consumers.

LPG bookings in Kolkata rose from 3.9 lakh to over 75 lakhs within a span of few days.

In some areas, the prices for commercial cylinders in black markets have reached Rs. 3,000, significantly higher than official prices.

Public Reactions on India’s LPG Crisis

• The Public reactions reflected across social media and local communities shows anxiety and frustration. 

• Many residents shared their experiences and said, cooking is a basic necessity and delays which can disrupt routine life and waiting outside agencies for hours to secure their cylinders.

• Bookings electric induction cooktop increased as the replacement of LPG or PNG. Seeing this the prices of induction cooktops surged in no time. 

• Some citizens have even expressed their concern that quickly rising LPG prices already place a financial burden on middle and lower income households.

• Small food vendors and street eateries are the ones who are highly affected by this crisis as seen. Rising fuel cost could increase their food prices as well.

• The crisis is more challenging for the families dependent upon the government schemes like Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana for subsidized LPG cylinders.

• People are writing on social media platforms as well raising their concerns. Despite LPG bookings deliveries are being delayed across the country affecting people largely.

Government’s Response and the Action Taken

In order to control the situation and ensure that Indian consumers do not suffer, the Government of India held a meeting attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other senior ministers. The key measures and actions announced therein are:

• Importing LPG from alternate countries, a figure of 40 countries is surfacing on the internet.
• Increasing production in domestic refineries
• Supplying more LPG to households instead on industries
• Temporarily reducing the industrial gas allocations to 70-80%

Centre has urged states to help in limiting the spread of mis-information across their states and urged them to properly distribute LPG cylinders for households.

Union Minister Piyush Goyal assured citizens of India that the government is continuously monitoring the situation and urging people not to panic since there is no shortage of LPG fuel.

PM Modi also assured citizens, in his latest speech, not to panic amid the crisis. The government is monitoring the situation closely and urged citizens to believe in official updates rather than rumours.

Indian Oil and Union Minister Hardeep Puri also assured citizens not to panic from their official twitter handles.
