Delhi Pollution: Delhi is highly susceptible to air pollution, especially during the winter season. In response, Delhi’s Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government is implementing measures to address this pressing issue. Delhi’s Environment Minister Gopal Rai recently launched the “Red Light On-Gaadi Off” campaign and urged the BJP not to “take revenge against Delhiites.”
The campaign kicked off at the ITO crossing in the city, where the Delhi Environment Minister encouraged drivers to reduce pollution by turning off their vehicle engines at red lights. Volunteers participated by holding placards with messages like “Yuddh Pradushan Ke Virudh.”
The Minister appealed to drivers to help reduce pollution
In a media address, Minister Gopal Rai highlighted the worsening pollution levels and identified the main contributors as biomass burning, dust, and vehicle emissions. He emphasized, “It has been observed that when someone drives in Delhi, they stop at around 8 to 10 red lights before reaching their destination.
Delhi Pollution: If they wait at an intersection for 2 minutes without switching off their vehicle, they waste 25 to 30 minutes’ worth of fuel unnecessarily. This mindset needs to change. Our entire campaign aims to encourage people to make switching off their vehicles at red lights a habit.”
Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) invoked Stage 2 of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP)
Due to the deteriorating air quality in Delhi, imposing restrictions on coal, firewood, diesel generators, and other fossil fuels. These restrictions took effect from 8:00 AM on Tuesday. Minister Rai stated, “In the last few years, due to the hard work of Delhiites and concerned departments, pollution levels have decreased by about 34.6 percent. Delhi is once again ready in this fight against pollution.”
Delhi Pollution: The Minister also noted that stubble burning has reduced in Punjab since the AAP government took office two years ago; however, it has increased in Uttar Pradesh and Haryana. The city faces not only local pollution but also pollution from neighboring states, which significantly exacerbates air quality issues.
