Cyclone Dana Update: A severe cyclonic storm, named Cyclone Dana, is building up over the East Central Bay of Bengal and is expected to hit the coast, posing a great threat to Odisha and West Bengal. The sustained wind speed is likely to reach 120 km/h, posing a great threat to authorities as well as for common people. It is expected to move northwestwards and develop into a severe cyclonic storm over northwest Bay of Bengal and cross North Odisha and West Bengal by early morning of 24th October. Origins and Intensification of Cyclone Dana

Dana Cyclone Update: According to the official Press Release by IMD (ID no 3357), Cyclone “DANA” has intensified over the East Central Bay of Bengal. The system is moving northwestward at 13 km/h. At 1130 hours IST on October 23, the system centred near latitude 16.7° N and longitude 89.6°E, lay about 490 km southeast of Paradip (Odisha), 570 km south-southeast of Sagar Island (West Bengal), and 520 km south-southeast of Dhamara (Odisha). An orange alert has been issued by the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD).

Cyclone Dana Update: The cyclone Cyclone Dana is very likely to intensify into a severe cyclonic storm by the early morning of October 24. It is likely to cross the coasts of Odisha and West Bengal between Puri and Sagar Island, near Bhitarkanika-Dhamra, about midnight of October 24 and early morning of October 25 with sustained winds of 100-110 km/h and gusts up to 120 km/h. Authorities in both states are in a state of high alert.

  • Evacuations are underway, with 1.14 lakh and around 3 lakh people evacuated in West Bengal and Odisha respectively, and the process still on-going.
  • Landfall is expected to take place tonight, everything is on high alert, flights suspended, ports alerted, evacuation underway, and many such arrangements have been made.

Cyclone Dana Update: Cyclone Dana will have a considerable impact across the eastern and northeastern states of India, most particularly in:

  • 14 Odisha Affected Districts: Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, Puri, Bhadrak, Balasore, Mayurbhanj, Angul, Nayagarh, Khordha Keonjhar, Dhenkanal, Cuttack, Ganjam, and Jajpur.
  • West Bengal Affected Areas: Sagar Island, East and west Medinipur, South and North 24 Parganas, Jhargram, Howrah, Hooghly, Kolkata, and Bankura.

  • Extremely Heavy Rainfall expected at East and west Medinipur, South and North 24 Parganas, Jhargram, Howrah, Hooghly, Kolkata, and Bankura districts of West Bengal on 24th & 25th October.
  • Northeastern States: Light to moderate rainfall is expected over Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Mizoram, Manipur, and Tripura during the next 3-4 days. Light to moderate rainfall at isolated places comprising Arunachal Pradesh during next 7 days.

Wind Warning

  • East Central Bay of Bengal: 70-90 kmph gusting to 100 kmph from 23rd Evening to 24th October morning, decrease thereafter.
  • Northwest Bay of Bengal: 70-90 kmph gusting to 100 kmph from 23rd Evening to 24th October night. 100-110 kmph to 120 kmph till 25th October morning, decreasing thereafter.
  • Odisha & West Bengal Coastal Areas: 40-50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph from 23rd October evening. It will increase from 60-70 kmph gusting to 80 kmph on 24th morning and 100-110 kmph gusting to 120 kmph in and off north Odisha. Wind speed of 60-80 kmph gusting to 90 kmph covering south Odisha along with districts of West Bengal from 24th night till 25th morning, decreasing thereafter.

Fishermen Warning 

  • Central and North Bay of Bengal are barred from fishing permanently from 23rd to 25th October 2024.
  • Fishermen are advised not to go in the following areas:
    • East Central Bay of Bengal (23rd-25th October)
    • West Central Bay of Bengal and adjoining areas (24th October)
    • Along and off Odisha, West Bengal and Bangladesh Coasts, and along Northwest & adjoining northeast Bay of Bengal (till 25th October 2024).

Railways & Roadways Affected

Authorities at Indian Railways have thus prepared a contingency plan and have already cancelled in advance more than 150 trains, including some high-profile routes such as the Howrah-Puri and Howrah-Bhubaneswar Shatabdi Express. This is to ensure safety for the passengers and to avoid disruption of services in case of flooding and damage to the tracks.

Response and Readiness by Authorities

The Odisha government, with support from disaster managing teams, has mobilised large-scale resources in a bid to minimise damages from Cyclone Dana by:

Accommodation Arrangements 

  • 842 Multipurpose Shelters are ready for evacuated people.
  • 5402 temporary shelter buildings have been identified for accomodation.

  • According to the information shared by Special Relief Commissioner, Govt of Odisha through a Press Release on 23rd October 2024, 10.60 lakh people from 3026 low lying areas will be accomodated in above level districts by the evening of 23rd October.
  • All necessary arrangements regarding food, shelter and volunteers have been made.

Rescue Teams

51 Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF) teams, 178 fire service teams, 20 NDRF teams, additional 40 fire service teams (ready), additional 5 NDRF teams airlifted from Bathinda (ready), and animal rescue will also be done along with human rescue.

  • A helicopter has been demanded from the Ministry of Home Affairs for Relief and Rescue Operations.
  • All Educational Institutions to remain closed in all 14 districts from 23rd to 25th October.

  • Engineering Departments are advised to make necessary arrangements for clearing roads after the disaster.
  • Hoardings to be removed in coastal areas of prone districts.
